The Arguments and Issues
Aside from a rushed technological slant to pursue the science of cloning, the science itself is not absolute, and is based on a foundation of death and mutilation. While not addressed humane reasons against cloning, every scientist who promotes the safety of the meat, is reluctant to give an absolute, 100% guarantee of its safety for consumption. |

Safety
In the very same meeting held by the ACNFP in 2010, “Welsh farmers and organic campaigners condemned the advice given by the ACNFP to the Food Standards Agency, labeling it ‘dangerous and dubious’ and ‘not good enough’" (Malone). Why so, if scientists have indicated that the technology is safe and no differences are found? Herein, those against closing for consumption cite the very words science uses and their reluctance to issue a definitive and absolute statement to safety. The advice given to the ACNFP is “hypothetically” based, and “unlikely” to be dangerous if humans consume cloned meat (Malone). However, Malone highlights the same concern as previously occurring with science as it relates to food production, in that cows were assumed not to suffer any effects by “feeding cattle meat-and-bone meal,” which resulted in the exponential threat of BSE, also “Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, or Mad Cow Disease” (CDC). While it can be argued that this was isolated, this confirms the suspicions and reluctance of scientists to issue a definitive statement on safety, because they cannot account for environmental control and interaction with other chemicals, stimulants and other such countless factors; of which Shantin also corroborates the concern of lack of certainty, as they are “virtually identical” (Shantin). Ultimately, the “FSA [Food Standards Agency, United Kingdom based]…admit that 'the current evidence on the composition of meat and milk is relatively limited,’ there are insufficient long-term studies into the impacts of cloned foodstuffs on human health" (Malone). |
Humane and Ethical Complexities
Playing and altering the genetic code of any organism will always result in the countless failures to achieve moderate degrees of success, eventually reaching desired goals and objectives. While the general citizenry will not see the multiple suffrage and death of such “vermin” as lab rats, the impact on larger animals cannot be denied and ethically ignored. This research has resulted in “a host of abnormalities and ailments: hypertension; kidney, abnormalities; liver problems; limb and body wall defects; abnormally large babies; premature deaths; intestinal, blockages; diabetes; shortened tendons; deformed feet; weakened immune systems; dysfunctional hearts and brains; large udders; respiratory distress; and circulatory problems” (Feight et. al 6). The surrogate mothers of the animals cannot be ignored, as they suffer from multiple “repeated surgeries and injections,” “fetal overgrowth,” and “pregnancy complications that have resulted in death” (Washington Times).
While scientific success is based on consistency of a theory that generally holds true is most circumstances, it has been proved by science that there will always be suffrage and death of animals with this kind of research in the most unethical manner; that in the creation, birth and death of life.
